Invokana Patient Assistance Program

Invokana is a once-daily tablet prescribed for adults and pediatric patients aged 10 years and older with type 2 diabetes, a condition that affects 40 million people per year, to bring blood sugar under better control. It contains canagliflozin, which works through the kidneys, prompting them to remove surplus glucose from the body rather than returning it to the bloodstream. For some patients it also lowers the risk of serious kidney and heart problems tied to diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes rarely lets up, and staying on top of it depends heavily on medication that does its job day after day. Skipping doses to stretch a budget can quietly set the stage for damage to your heart, kidneys, and nerves.

Should the price of Invokana move past what your coverage will handle, or if you’re going through a period without insurance, a Patient Assistance Program (PAP) may be worth turning to if you qualify.

About the Invokana Patient Assistance Program

Drug manufacturers run these programs to place their medicines in the hands of patients who could not otherwise afford them. The one for Invokana serves adults with type 2 diabetes whose insurance leaves a gap too wide to manage.

Two items get you moving: a prescription from the doctor overseeing your diabetes, and paperwork that spells out your household income for the past year.

Send those our way, and the rest falls to us. We approach your physician for the clinical facts the manufacturer requires, fit your income records to the program’s format, and turn it all in as a single application. We stay with it through the review, and once approved, your Invokana is delivered for continued use. Clearing the criteria is no promise of a yes, since the manufacturer looks at every application individually.

How Invokana Works

Type 2 diabetes throws off the body’s handling of blood sugar, either because it makes too little insulin or because it no longer responds to insulin well. Left high, that sugar slowly harms blood vessels and organs.

Canagliflozin steps in at the kidneys.

Normally your kidneys filter glucose out and then reabsorb it back into your blood. This medication blocks the protein responsible for that reabsorption, so the excess glucose exits through your urine instead of building up. Lower blood sugar follows, and for some people the medication also eases strain on the heart and kidneys over the long run.

You take Invokana once a day before your first meal. Sticking with it consistently is what keeps your levels where they should be.

Side Effects and Safety Information

Flushing sugar out through the urine shapes most of what you might feel on Invokana. Genital yeast infections and urinary tract infections happen more readily, because that extra sugar feeds bacteria and yeast, and women run into them more often than men.

The same loss of fluid can leave you dehydrated or dizzy, particularly when you rise to your feet, so keeping up your water intake matters.

Invokana has been linked to a raised risk of lower-limb amputations, mostly involving the toes and feet, so check your feet regularly and tell your doctor about any sores, tenderness, or infection. It can also make bones somewhat more prone to fracture. On its own the drug seldom pushes blood sugar too low, though paired with certain other diabetes medicines it can.

Invokana may cause ketoacidosis – a serious, life-threatening condition – and it can occur even when glucose is not markedly elevated. It may also cause Fournier’s gangrene, which presents with pain, redness and swelling around the genitals or perineum; these symptoms require urgent medical evaluation.

How it applies / Eligibility

To qualify, you’ll need to meet all of the following:

  • Single patients earning less than $40,000 per year
  • Couples making under $60,000 combined yearly
  • Households with three or more people bringing in below $100,000 annually
  • Active Invokana prescription from your healthcare provider
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency
  • Limited or inadequate prescription drug coverage for Invokana

Income tends to matter most, but the review takes in your wider situation as well, and no two applications are decided the same way.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ`s)

What happens if my application gets denied?

You’ll receive a written note explaining the decision. Common reasons are income above the program’s line, insurance seen as sufficient, or an application that was missing a piece. If your income changes or you turn up the missing item, reapplying is always open to you.

How do program renewals work?

Your enrollment covers a year and then has to be renewed. Ahead of the program’s deadline, you submit fresh income records along with your doctor’s word that Invokana is still needed. Miss the deadline and your coverage through the program drops off.

What documents do I need to apply?

A current Invokana prescription from a licensed provider, twelve months of household income records, proof of citizenship or legal residency, and the details of any drug coverage you have.

How does Patient Help Network assist with applications?

We manage enrollment the whole way, verifying you meet the standards, collecting the paperwork, working with your care team on their piece, and sending a finished application to the manufacturer.

Is there a generic version of Invokana available?

The FDA has approved generic canagliflozin, although pharmacy availability and insurance coverage may vary. Those approved through the program are given brand-name Invokana.

How long does the manufacturer review usually take?

It depends on how full the manufacturer’s queue is and how many people they have reviewing applications. We keep in contact and share updates the moment we get them.

Can eligibility requirements change over time?

They’re subject to change. A manufacturer can raise or lower an income limit, redefine what it counts as adequate coverage, or rework another term as its goals shift. We follow the programs and let you know when a change affects your eligibility.
